History of tourism in the area

As we have already mentioned, the development of the area started when significant amounts of gold were found here, and Hotel Tunturi’s Gielas building now stands where Johan Alfred Piponius found 329 grams of gold.

When Eevert Kiviniemi found a nugget weighing 393 grams, the following gold rush meant that many services were needed, and thus ​accommodation, food and other services were developed.

In the 1930s, it became easier to get to Saariselkä when the road to Petsamo was completed.

The strongest construction phases happened from the late 1960s until the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, the country suffered from the economic crisis, and construction declined. Since the early 1990s, the main focus has been on the construction of new parts for hotels and other buildings, as well as renovating and supplementing old parts.
